A $55.4 million transformation is turning a beloved Lionshead ice rink into Vail’s year-round home for hockey, skating, concerts and community life.

Dobson Arena is entering the final stretch of the most significant renovation in its history, with programming scheduled to return in November 2026. The project preserves the unmistakable roof that has framed the arena since 1979 while rebuilding the venue around a broader idea: Dobson is still an ice arena, but it is also becoming one of Vail’s most flexible indoor gathering places. Vail has world-class outdoor venues and a strong calendar of seasonal events, yet dependable, high-capacity indoor space has long been limited. The renewed Dobson will give residents and guests a modern venue for hockey and figure skating, concerts, shows and community celebration right in the heart of Village of Vail.

Originally opened in 1979, Dobson is one of the largest multi-purpose ice facilities on Colorado’s Western Slope. The Town of Vail owns the building, and the Vail Recreation District operates it under a long-term lease. The work grew out of Vail’s 2019 Civic Area Plan and a planning effort that accelerated in 2023. Construction began in April 2025. According to the Town of Vail’s Dobson Arena Remodel Project, the design principles were straightforward: honor a Colorado icon, improve daily operations and guest experience, support the community’s future needs, and create a destination capable of attracting new events.

The new Dobson Ice Arena improvements include:

• New south and west entrances
• New south seating stands
• A wraparound concourse and mezzanine level
• Additional concessions, bathrooms and locker rooms
• Modern concert-rigging infrastructure
• Maximum capacity of approximately 1,500 for hockey and 3,500 for concerts and shows

Populous designed the project, Hyder/McHugh Construction is building it, and Cumming Group is serving as the owner’s representative. The approximately $55.4 million budget includes $48.8 million from the Vail Reinvestment Authority, $3.4 million from the Vail Recreation District and $800,000 from the Town’s Real Estate Transfer Tax Fund, together with sponsorships and fundraising.

Regular arena programming is expected throughout November. Registration is already open for 2026 youth hockey programs through the Vail Recreation District, while details for the concert and community celebration will be announced closer to opening.

The physical transformation comes with a new Dobson identity developed with Edwards-based 970 Design. Its standalone “D” and “three-line motif reference skate marks, sound waves and the slats of the arena’s roof”. That roof was one of the elements the public most wanted to preserve—an architectural reminder that this is an evolution of Dobson, not a replacement of Dobson Ice Arena history.

For the entire Vail Valley and specifically, the Villages of Vail, this reinvented arena adds another valuable asset to the Vail Mountain community: a true four-season indoor amenity. This building will be able to shift from youth hockey to a 3,500-person concert in an instant and then, back; and creates another venue that is less dependent on the fluctuating seasons.

The Town of Vail’s sustained investment in public spaces, cultural programming and recreation strengthens the experience of living for residents, second-home owners and all guests to the Vail Valley. The Town of Vail’s substantial commitment to the renovation of Dobson Arena is another good example of the renaissance that continues to reshape and improve the Vail experience.

The opening schedule is taking shape, but the Nov. 28 performer, ticket information, public-skating calendar and additional winter programming have not yet been announced.
